Vegan Diet for Blood Sugar Control

Objective

Does a vegan diet improve glycemic response?

Description

Protein content in the diet affect may affect glycemic response. This is interesting to Type 2 diabetics as well as anyone concerned about his or her blood sugar levels. In this study, we look at whether a short-term vegan diet has an effect on glycemic response in normal and diabetic people.

This is a 4 day study.
  • On Day 1, track your blood glucose level and food as normal.
  • On Days 2-4, replace all animal protein calories in your diet with equal calories from nuts, almonds legume or beans (do not add - bread, sugar or sweets to your diets) and measure your blood sugar levels regularly.
This change of protein calories with the nuts & legume calories will result in smart lowering of daily protein intake, which is the major goal of the experiment.

Before you join please read the summary to fully understand the experiment.

Inclusion Criteria

This study is open to all (diabetics and non-diabetics)

Exclusion Criteria

All Diabetic Type 2 participants need to consult their physician before starting 3 Vegan days.
Before you join please read the summary to fully understand the experiment:
  1. Take the participant questionnaire
  2. On Day 1 (normal diet), make no lifestyle changes and enter your fasting glucose level using the Glucose Tracker on Genomera
  3. During Days 2-4 (vegan diet), replace animal protein calories with equal calories from nuts, almonds legume or beans (do not add - bread, sugar or sweets). Make sure calories are equal. You may want to write down what you eat to make sure.
  4. Track your fasting glucose levels each morning using Glucose Tracker
Optional: Track other parameters, such as weight, mood, blood pressure. Post your findings on the study wall.

DinaRalt welcome... are you vegan? and if not, would you try 3 days of vegan diet?

drdelorenzo

drdelorenzo I am not strictly vegan, but in fact my meals contain not much of meat..

DinaRalt

DinaRalt do you have any idea why people are so reluctant to try the 3 days of vegan diet?

DinaRalt

DinaRalt hi and welcome. Will appreciate suggestions for promoting Vegan ideas...

PaulCapestany

PaulCapestany Hey Dina.. I'm new here and I just read over the study summary. I guess since I've been vegan for the past 14 years I can't really partake in this study. Sounds cool though, really curious to see the results!

DinaRalt

DinaRalt The vegan people love the experiment but it is not easy to convince others to try ...even for just 3 days. I think they know (in their hearts) that it is best and afraid that they will have to become Vegans :-)

EriGentry

EriGentry I'm super interested in trying a vegan diet. I just have to get my glucose monitor!

EriGentry Yes! Now that we've got the Instrument, we're ready to rock! Dina and I will be putting out the word on the Genomera blog and the Quantified Self blog and forums. Where else would you all recommend? I'm thinking... diabetes, vegan and vegetarian interest sites and forums. Have any specific recs?

DinaRalt

DinaRalt what do you think on sites like WEGOHEALTH http://www.wegohealth.com/ or TUDIABETES http://www.tudiabetes.org/ that are very social?

EriGentry

EriGentry We should definitely announce the study in Tudiabetes (good that it is centered around diabetes). I'm not sure how large the community there is. http://www.tudiabetes.org/forum/categories/583967:Category:2624/listForCategory Wego seems a bit small but it's still worth putting the message out there. http://community.wegohealth.com/group/diabetes

DinaRalt

DinaRalt It will be nice if a journalist would write about Genomera and the new way of health research/studies

EriGentry

EriGentry updated the status of this study to be "In Progress."

EriGentry

EriGentry What type of glucose monitor do you use?

DinaRalt

DinaRalt We are running the experiment with diabetes because it is easy to measure the sugar effect, however vegetarians have lower risk for many ailments e.g. symptomatic Diverticular Disease http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3139912/?tool=pubmed

jzempel

jzempel I just saw a demo of this iPhone "nugget" last night. Pretty cool. http://j.mp/r9TSeB

DinaRalt

DinaRalt yes very cool...there are various smart applications and I guess it will make diabetes (as well as other maladies) more smartly followed and cured. http://www.technologyreview.com/computing/38065/?nlid=nldly&nld=2011-07-21&a=f

jzempel Thanks, Dina! I'm part of the Genomera dev team and am excited about the study you're organizing here. Please let me know if there is anything I can help with.

DinaRalt

DinaRalt Is it possible that Bill Clinton had heard of our study? :) http://edition.cnn.com/2011/HEALTH/08/18/bill.clinton.diet.vegan/

EriGentry

EriGentry fabulous!

DinaRalt

DinaRalt he is definitely a smart promotor ...

DinaRalt

DinaRalt Dear visitor...we are almost there with our study, we are waiting for the final instrument - the glucose tracker. If you feel like writing about yourself, it will be nice if you could let us know how you have heard about the study and what do you expect?

DinaRalt

DinaRalt I guess you are right Greg, but I wanted to post a general title as it is healthful to all of us. People like to experiment with friends and this title might open collaborations with friends who are non-diabetic. What do you think?

gbiggers

gbiggers Great study idea, Dina. We would love to help you, even with the communication and design. I might suggest changing the title to 'Veganism for Type 2 Diabetes' 'Vegan diet for glycemic control.'
