gbiggers

gbiggers We are looking for a couple of people to help pilot a new butter study. @yoni, from the doctoral program at Stanford, is organizing a Butter Mind 3 study, using some new cognitive measurement instruments. It is a brand new study, and it is connecting to an external app for the instruments. So we would like to pilot the study with a small group before inviting more. If you would be up for helping replicate/test the results of butter mind with a follow on study, come join Butter Mind 3: http://genomera.com/studies/cognitive-effects-of-butter-or-butter-mind-3

China seeks to unlock secrets of herbs, roots

Reuters · posted by EriGentry
EriGentry

EriGentry "In the quest for better and newer drugs, scientists in China are re-examining traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) -- roots and herbs that have been used for thousands of years -- to find and reproduce the active ingredients so they may be made into drugs that can be easily manufactured and consumed. But unlike many Chinese drugmakers who already sell TCMs in powders and capsules, scientists are going a step further by putting these experimental medicines through rigorous clinical tests so that they may find wider acceptance globally."

dshen Hey all, I'm a big fan of 4 Hour Body. Anyone here a convert?

jzempel

jzempel I'm pretty much a fanatic (guzzling water right now). What parts of 4HB are you tracking with?

dshen

dshen ha lots of things: 1. i started on his diet recommendation by taking PAG of his PAGG stack (couldn't take green tea, made me nauseous) and cutting all sugar and white starch out of my diet. i also upped my protein intake and eat more beans, esp for bkfast. lots of protein powder! fat % is the lowest i've been ever, and not only when i peak for a race. 2. then i tried out his deadlift/benchpress routine to increase strength for running and swimming (i'm an ironman triathlete). works great! 3. i also started doing asrspeed.com per his recommendation. really improved my speed greatly! 4. THEN

dshen

dshen oops hit the submit button! 4. i am also train total immersion for swimming. just got certified as a TI coach! what are you doing in 4HB?

EriGentry

EriGentry I was very intrigued by the results Tim showed in the book, so I tried the diet and exercise protocol for fat loss. It didn't my weight or body measurements, and after a couple months of lentils and high-protein, my blood showed elevated BUN (blood urea nitrogen) and creatinine, suggesting impaired kidney function. I stopped eating meat and legumes right away. From what I hear, men do great on Tim's plan ;). Any women here have feedback?

gbiggers

gbiggers Green tea makes my wife nauseous, too. I wonder if there is some bio marker for that trait.

dshen

dshen Re: eri gentry Thats interesting! Did your BUN and creatinine levels come back to normal? Was it the diet that caused impaired liver function or is there something going on witn your liver in general, meaning it doesnt react well to this type of diet or similar? Excuse me if im getting too private- no issue if youd rather not respond. Thx I didnt go full on 4HB diet. I only cut out all sugars, white starches, and ate natural foods as much as possible. I am down to taking AG in the morning and PAG at night and thats it. I think that once i reached a plateau i really didnt need much to maintain. But i also train heavily so the calorie output is constant and high too.

dshen

dshen Re: gbiggers Only green tea pills make me nauseous. I still drink green tea but obviously the concentration is significantly less. I just ordered a 23andme test so maybe we can figure out if my DNA shows some marker that makes me react to high doses of green tea extract...

jzempel

jzempel @dshen - trying lot's of 4HB on this end, too. Actually, it's been long enough since I read portions of the book, that I've started to wonder if I'm incorporating non-ferriss-approved elements into my regimen. I try to stay close to the diet. I gulp 2 liters of ice-cold water within 30 minutes of waking and try to slam a breakfast of eggs within 1 hour of waking. Fruit is a treat reserved for cheat day. At night I have a couple teaspoons of almond or peanut butter to prevent overnight blood sugar lows. I try to stick with crossfit for workouts. There are some similarities with 4HB (kettlebell), but overall CF is probably more intense. I'll do cold showers, but I haven't gotten the nerve to try an ice bath. I started with the full PAGG stack, but haven't renewed my supplement supply. I saw really good results in both weight and fat mass that I haven't enjoyed since tailing off the PAGG. Maybe some time I'll sanitize my charted measurements and share them here.

dshen

dshen ha yeah i haven't done the ice pack altho i bought one just out of curiosity. i already sit in enough ice baths after my long runs! but i am not sure i need to drop my fat % further. crossfit is pretty intense. i'm not sure my bod could take it! i do kettlebells every now and then, and just got into indian club swinging. very much a gray cook and pavel fan when it comes to the latest theories in training and keeping mobility and strength. i would be very curious on tracking for 4HB - i have an Omron body monitor and write down my measurements every morning. I also have a withings scale. i would love to hear how others track their progress with something like 4HB. this is something somebody in the startup world should work on...!
